With Social Distancing all the rage, I did a tasting with one of my buddies over text. I know, a little odd but times are odd.
Heaven Hill 7 year Bottled in Bond (100 proof) ( $40 - $65 limited states )
Elijah Craig Small Batch store pick by Cheers on 109 (94 proof) ( $35 )
Jack Daniels Rye single barrel store pick Center Point Liquors (94 proof ) ( I think < $55 )
Not really fair to throw a rye against 2 bourbons, but we did.
Conclusions: We liked all 3. HH 7 year was the winner. Can get yourself in trouble with this bottle it's very smooth and easy drinking. EC was 2nd, JD Rye was 3rd. However, the JD Rye is my favorite product that they (JD) are making. I think it's better than the JD Single Barrel and their Barrel Strength. The HH 7 year ( if you can find it and then if < $50 ) is a great selection. EC Store pick for $35 is a great value pick as well.
Better than Blantons? No, none of the 3.
Worth the price? I think all 3 are worth the price. If you've never had a rye before I would try and find the Sazarac Rye by Buffalo Trace. Should be around $35 - $38 dollars. I think Sazarac Rye is better. However, if you like that bottle, I would then try and get a taste at a friend / bar of the JD Rye Single Barrel.
