I really like store picks. Some of the best bottles I've tasted are single barrels that were picked so when my local favorite beverage store, Cheers Wine and Spirits, got their Knob Creek Single Barrel store pick in I had to go and scoop it up and was not disappointed at all. I'd have to say that $ for $ this is some of the best money I've spent on bourbon. Below are my tasting notes but reading it won't be as fun as you actually trying it for yourself.
Nose – the smell is really good. You get a full nose of baking spices that is very pungent and makes you think that the drink will really be complex. Does not smell near as strong as the 120 proof would suggest.
Drink – The first thing you notice about this drink is it is extremely complex. Brown sugar and cinnamon really come together to give you almost a baked apple mixture to it. This is probably one of the smoothest bourbon’s I’ve had at this proof and although it isn’t officially a barrel proof it is close enough to basically be considered that and definitely tastes like one. You also get a slight vanilla taste through the drink that I think is partly what keeps it so smooth tasting.
Finish – The solid taste from the drink stays through the end and gives you a moderate burn that isn’t too much. Some oak comes on at the end that is a nice touch.
I was really happy with this store pick. Enjoy it yourself and let me know what you think. Cheers!
